A Warm Finish to January & Start to February

Written by John DiPasquale:

It was a mild & damp January for sure, but there was at least a little more snow in January than December which one would expect. Still we ended up being 8.3" below average in the snow category at the Rochester airport.

After a spring-like finish to January & start to this month, it will turn more seasonable for the remainder of the week into Super Bowl weekend. The chances for snow are low, though. Other than a passing snow shower/flurry or two, I really don't see any significant snows in the foreseeable future. However, there's a small chance that a storm could come out of the Southern Plains & deliver some measureable snow to the area later Saturday night into Sunday. At this point, it looks like it will stay south, but the latest data is trending the storm a bit further north. It's definitely a storm worth watching, but don't get your hopes up snow lovers. Either way, it will likely turn windy & colder on Super Bowl Sunday.

Have a nice day everyone!

  1. Do not worry John. Our hopes are not up. This winter is a BIG loss.

  2. Love the Spring coming weather today. I do want to know what caused the beautiful sundown sky last night. There were pink striped in the clouds around 5:30pm. We saw this as we drove down Castle Rd in Henrietta. Wish I had a camera to photograph it. Absolutely beautiful view for us.

  3. So now I'm worried about spring and summer! it seems things even out over time, so will we pay for a mild winter with a cool spring or summer? What does history say about what follows a mild winter?

  4. I think last night was the first time I walked out at midnight and looked at Orion in a clear sky while it was 50 degrees in January.
This has really been a great run.

  5. In 2001-02, a winter that looked just like this, the spring was cold, windy, rainy and occasionally snowy. It snowed on May 18, in fact. Summer 2002 was very warm, with more than a dozen days in the 90s IIRC.

  6. Looks like even Scott has now backed off that cold late next week that he seemed excited about the other night. This is really a horrible pattern for snow and it is not going to change I am becoming weatherdan need my meds.

  7. That's it, I'm done wishing. We will not get enough snow to ride snowmobiles or enjoy sledding with my girls ever this season. Warm temps now for the beginning of next week when it was originally said to be the change. The change will NOT happen this season and we will NOT get any more snow...how's this reverse psychology working??? Not so well

  8. Chris in Sodus Pt., I hope we follow a pattern similar to 01-02. While I'm not excited by the prospect of rainy and temps in the 40's until June..the two winters after that year were pretty snowy.
