Saturday Morning Seiche
If you were out on the Lake Ontario shoreline Saturday morning, you may have noticed a strange rise/fall in the water level on the beach. The strong storms that rolled through (which also brought in some pretty awesome clouds) created a seiche, which comes from a French word meaning "to slosh."
A rapid fall and rise in air pressure, combined with strong winds out of the north essentially pushed the water in the lake toward the southern shore, causing it to almost pile up here. Then, the water sloshes back and forth, like water in a bowl. They aren't very common here in Rochester because of the shape and depth of Lake Ontario. They are more comon on Lake Erie.
