Winter Feel Blows In for Weekend...

Written by John DiPasquale:

Well, it has been unusually mild, & sunny lately, but this is now starting to change as a cold front is sweeping through as I type, which will send readings out of the 50s & into the 40s pretty quickly this afternoon.  A reinforcing shot of colder air will then push through late tonight/early Saturday & set off some flurries & squalls off the lake.  Not much accumulation is anticipated with this for most, just a coating to an inch or two, while in the most persistent snows across Eastern Wayne, the Eastern Finger Lakes, especially over the high terrain, & likewise between Buffalo & Cleveland a 2 to as much as 5 or 6 inches of snow could very well fall!  So if you have travel plans in those areas be mindful of this, & plan on giving yourself a little extra time to deal with the winter driving conditions.

On Sunday, it will be brisk & chilly with a bit of general snow shower activity from a disturbance.  A coating to an inch or so is possible, but this should hamper travel too much, as many come back home.  Temperatures through the weekend will only be in the mid 30s, with wind chills in the 20s!  Bundle up!

Monday looks quiet & chilly, but then the question for Tuesday & Wednesday is the storm brewing down south.  At this time, it looks like we could pick up at least some snow &/or a wintry mix from it.  The big question is how much?  As we all know, it depends on the track.  The latest 12z guidance is leaning toward a weaker solution & a little further east, which would not mean much for us, but we'll see...Stay tuned through the weekend for updates.

Have a great day & rest of your holiday weekend everyone!

  1. It looks like Eastern Ny and New England could see a pretty good storm next week. As for us, we miss it. Too far East. Shock shock shocker!!!! It will be cold next week but boring for us.

  3. First overtime of the season this morning, roads where very icy, here in Hamlin. There wasnt much but enough for a salt run, keep it coming the more the better. If nothing else atleast it looks to be cold next week. The colder the better. I like the cold air just as much as nice warm weather. Bring on the cold and snow cant wait.

  4. SOMEONE LAST WEEK SAID THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER WOULD BE COLD. WRONG!!!!

ONE THING THAT DOES LOOK MORE CERTAIN IS A PATTERN CHANGE BACK TO
WARMER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS. THE UPPER LEVEL FLOW WILL BECOME MORE
ZONAL TOWARDS THE END OF THE PERIOD...WITH BOTH THE GFS AND ECMWF
FAVORING SEVERAL STRONG UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVES DROPPING SOUTHWARD
ALONG THE PACIFIC COASTLINE. THIS WOULD PUSH THE HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE
FROM THE ROCKIES EASTWARD...WITH WARMER AIR SENT OUR WAY. AS WE
START DECEMBER THE 8-14 DAY FORECAST MADE BY CPC ALSO FAVORS WARMER
    THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

If it was my blog on November 17 at 1:52 PM. I will let you know there is a big difference between the words WOULD BE COLD and what I said LOOKS AS IF December MIGHT start off colder than normal.

READ MORE CAREFULLY AND STOP HIDING BEHIND THE TITLE ANONYMOUS WHEN COMPLAINING.

Also December is not here yet and NOVEMBER IS ENDING MUCH COLDER THAN NORMAL.

THANKS FOR BLOG MAKES THIS BLOG PAGE FUN

  7. Look at the ensembles on those models. Yeah the first couple of days of december is going to be warm/torchy.. it's what sets up after that that looks more favorable.

  8. I said the 1st half would be cold. Obviously, it does look like I was very wrong.. at least for the first week or so of December. I jumped on a modeled -NAO PNA ridge and opened my mouth. My foot doesn't taste good. I'll go out on a limb and say I like the look from about December 11th on?

  9. Caledonia, I think everyone thought the first week of Dec. would be cold based upon the negative NAO, you just got unlucky....

  10. Yes very quiet around here. But, November and December are usually not big storm months. We can only hope we a 1 or 2 big storms during Jan-March time frame. I do think cold air will settle in for a bit around mid December. We will have to wait and see.
