What a Difference a Year Makes!

Written by John DiPasquale:

After some nice spring weather the last few days, back to winter for much of the rest of the week & probably right through the weekend, & quite possibly beyond.  With the colder air there will be some snow showers & flurries, but should not add up that much for most Wednesday & Thursday.  Late Friday night into Saturday at least a minor accumulating snowfall is possible, but we'll see since it's still 4 to 5 days out.

This time a year ago, as the chart states, was the beginning of our crazy warm stretch that last two straight weeks!!  The numbers don't lie!  Obviously this March will be quite different when all is said & done.

Have a great night WNY!

  1. What is the update about major storm next week? Oh I know there is no major storm as predicted by the snow mongers. Seee you next winter this one is currently 20 of inches of snow below the average plus winter is done. Get used to it because this will become our normal winter about 70 inches a year.

You must have special powers and are able to control the weather, that's a lot of responsibility, please make sure you use your powers for good and not for evil.

  2. The Euro and GFS both show going to the great lakes in their latest run. This is still way to early but as I see it we need to continue to monitor this storm. I think it is going to be a BIG one for some.

  3. Europe is currently in the grips of a cold snap with a foot of snow falling in some places.. I wouldn't write off anything happening.

  4. though spring is in the air, i have a feeling there could be 2-3 storms that could damper things for some still, if not here, elsewhere. the one 4 the 19th looks in great lakes region, then it moves east to coast? even a little snowfall can cause the plow guys get out and i know some are growing very tired of 12-18+ callouts even when we had below average winter.

  5. Sadly it looks like we're going to pay the price for a below normal winter by having a crappy spring. I just hope we can get out of this so that at some point in mid April we start getting some consistent nice weather. And I sure hope we don't have a repeat of some years where we've had 12"-20" of snow in April, and doubly sure hope we don't repeat May 1989 with 10.9" of snow!

I love the snow, but by April 1 it really needs to go away.

    1. Andy, I agree with you. I am starting to get nervous that this summer might be one of those cold and damp ones.

@ Andrew is the storm you were mentioning above? Sounds like might be a temperature dependent event but it is so far out from now that a lot could change.

THE TRANQUIL CONDITIONS MAY BE RELATIVELY SHORT LIVED THOUGH. AS
ELUDED TO ABOVE...THE ECMWF IS DEPICTING A DEEPENING CUTTER STORM
THAT WILL LIFT FROM THE PLAINS TO THE CENTRAL GREAT LAKES MONDAY AND
TUESDAY. FOR OUR REGION...THIS COULD TRANSLATE INTO A BOUT OF
SYNOPTIC SNOW THAT WILL CHANGE OVER TO RAIN MONDAY NIGHT AND
TUESDAY. THE MAIN CONCERN THOUGH WILL BE THE THREAT FOR STRONG WINDS
WITH THIS EVENT. THIS SYSTEM WILL CERTAINLY DESERVE CLOSE WATCHING.

  7. It will be a west cutter like almost evry storm this winter except the ones that missed us South and East. We just cannot get a storm to go just East of us through Eastern, Ny. Unbelievable.

  8. Nothing set in stone. It is way to early so stay tuned but Michele that is the storm I was talking about. Still believe the storm will be powerful but track is certainly an uncertainty.

  9. Looking more like this is of course going to the west of Western, NY. Are we surprised?

  10. Any updates from the regular weather bloggers about that potential storm next week? Is there still potential or has it diminished. I am traveling to Boston Tuesday of next week just wondering what the experts are thinking?

  12. As stated by "The Troll" no big storms in the future and very little snow. Do you realize that we are not going to get to 70 inches of snow this season? Very much like last winter in terms of snow amounts. I for one am enjoying the on set of spring. Where are all the snow mongers with the big east coast storm talk for next week?

  14. Looks quite rainy next week, not snowy by any means.

  15. Spring showers as predicted.

  16. Yes, very spring like. The snow was coming down sideways in those spring breezes we are having. It is a balmy 34 with wind and snow at my house. This spring weather we have today just makes me want to fire up the grill and sit at the picnic table to enjoy a FROZEN soda. Yup, I sure love spring weather like this. Sarcasm is the only comment I have for such stupidity.

  17. Well looks like I am wrong again. I thought there would be a big snowstorm next week along the coast. It looked like the indices and teleconnections would be right. But does not look that way. More than likely going west and north. I have been wrong a lot and I apologize this winter. Maybe better next winter.

  18. That is why we need to stop saying watch next week, watch next week like we have been saying all winter. It never happend this year or last year. Storms go West most of the time now or too far south and east. This happens all the time. We will see next year but my gut tells me this is the new pattern for awhile now. Our snow totals will be below normal for years to come like the 80's. We will be spectators to BIG storms as always.
