FRIGID FOR ALL; BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WEST THROUGH TONIGHT

Written by John DiPasquale:

Not much snow for most of us, including the Greater Rochester area, but areas west will receive quite a bit more from near Batavia westbound to Buffalo area & south a bit into Northwest Wyoming County.  There will also be significant blowing & drifting snows creating blizzard conditions to the west, & even though there isn't much snow here in the Rochester area & Monroe & in Livingston counties there will be enough blowing & drifting to keep roads snow covered & icy in many spots, so be careful when venturing out in these areas too.

Everyone will feel the numbing chill with temperatures probably not even making the upper single digits in Rochester, which would set a record low high if that's in fact the case!  The record lowest high temperature in Rochester on this date, January 7th is 8° set back on 1886!  Believe we will break it the way we are not warming.  Wind chills will remain between about -10 & -20 this afternoon & much of tonight before finally climbing slowly, but surely above 0 by Wednesday afternoon.  So yes, Wednesday will become more tolerable, but far from good.  20s to near 30 will be felt Thursday with sun & not too much wind, so that will feel like a heat wave after a very cold start & then 30s Friday with maybe a little light snow/flurries Friday morning.  The weekend will likely be our January Thaw with highs quite possibly reaching the 50s Saturday with some rain developing!  More cold air will try to make a couple runs at us next week & thereafter the way it looks now.  Stay tuned for updates through the week.

Have a good night & stay inside & warm everyone!

    1. I'm no expert but I would say no. The wind chill advisory has been extended until 4am tomorrow meaning it will still be very cold for the children who walk or have to wait at a bus stop.

    2. The Wind Chill Warning for Monroe County goes until 6pm today. The 4am on Wednesday is for other Counties than Monroe.

  5. Maybe the city would look at possible closing because they have many kids who walk a distance to get their bus.

  7. Negative AO, positive PNA, neutral to weakly positive NAO appear to be on tap after mid month. Next week will be a good opportunity for us weary weather enthusiasts to recharge for Act II of winter.

  13. Additional lake fluff has raised Buffalo's official total to 17.1 inches:

No 3+ foot bullseye like what was originally feared, but still a paralyzing storm for the Buffalo area, especially just south and east of the city, despite a decent chunk of the airport total being stat-padding bonus snow towards the end.

  15. I promised myself that I wouldn't give more than a few hoots about the models until at least Saturday. I'm still tuckered out from all of the storm tracking and model watching I've done in recent weeks...it's been such an active winter/late fall that I actually need a break for a few days.

  16. It is interesting to say the least and I know it is 7 days out but out recent storms were detected early on the models.
