MODEL MAYHEM!
Written by: Bob Metcalfe
I've gotta tell ya, this is an exciting picture for a meteorologist or any winter weather lovers. This is the Euro output for about midnight NEXT Saturday.
You obviously can't miss the HUGE east coast storm! What the Euro has been hinting at is a digging east coast trough (cold air) combining with a tropical storm system that will meet it somewhere along the southeast coastline. If it all plays out according to plan, this is going to be a mess in the east!
But there's several key points. First, remember that this is a week ahead and the chances of this playing out exactly as you see here are very little. But what we can know for certainty is that ALL models across the board like the idea of a decent cool down somewhere in the east. The question remains: Will our area see the cold? Will we see the storm? It'll take at least two more days of data for us to draw any decent conclusions. The Euro threw the center of this storm from near Albany to western PA (as you see above) in just one run, meaning it is still uncertain as to the location. That would be the difference between us seeing a lot of wind with rain, and us seeing an unseasonably early measurable snowfall.
This will be the headline for most of the blogs over the coming days I'm sure. In case you're wondering, the GFS has us just really cold with sunshine and clouds at this same timeframe pictured above. Right now we're blending the forecast into a hybrid idea, but just know that SOMETHING will happen that will be fun for us weather nerds late next week. As for me, I'm going to continue reading snowblower ratings online!
Bob, your 7 day forecast shows temps in the mid 40's for Friday and Saturday. It will be hard to snow with those temps.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. What's exciting, Bob? And also, what zulu run is that model you're showing? You're making your audience very excited, while updating your seven day forecast from the upper 30's for Fiday to the lower 40's. Give us some details if you're going to put such a tease out there.
ReplyDeleteCut the kid some slack guys. He didn't say for SURE that anything was going to happen. He made it clear that there were lots of uncertainties. Some folks have reading comprehension problems on here. Whatever happens will happen and the news 8 team will keep us updated as they always do.
