Scott and crew, I know that trying to forecast to far into the future is not something that you like to do. But could you indicate what "trends" may be with us in the next few weeks. For example, will we get back towards more "normal" temperatures for April, or are we still going to be on the colder end for a while. I'll take the chilly temps for a bit, if the sun is out! I'm a little tired of the snow!! Bring on spring and my lawnmower!!!

  3. Michele, I am by no means a meteorologist, but the long range forecast is still trending below average temperatures through the first week of April! Of course, there is plenty of time for this to change.

And DK? I've been looking at the models and some runs are hinting at some more opportunities for snow. You think we will break 130 inches before the season is over?

  4. I think we have a shot at 130 between now and about April 15th. But, I don't think we'll go over that mark by much, though. 2 to 5 more inches should just about do it for Rochester. After about April 15th, I predict that we'll snap into at or above average temperatures for an extended period of time. The second half of April will be much different from the first half, in my opinion.

  5. Scott,
Do you have any theories as to why we've been so cold for so long this winter and last winter despite the el nino and la nina? Is this normal weather being weather? Or is there something forcing the climate into this outside of the traditional forcings that we understand?

  6. Scott,
I saw a video showing Washington, DC today. Their trees are already budding and leafing, and the flowers are bloomed. I know that DC is farther south, But has it been THAT warm there already? It's only March 24th.

  7. Great questions tonight, thanks! The trend the next two weeks or so will be below average temperatures. I don't expect significantly warmer air until around tax time. So at least there is something to look forward to on April 15th.

This Winter was so cold mostly due to a persistent negative NAO which dominated over the La Nina. Had La Nina dominated, much warmer air and lots of swings in the weather would have occurred. As to WHY that negative NAO was so strong, that'll take some research and time to understand.

  8. Washington DC usually begins to see budding trees this time of year, nothing new there.
