A Wild Wednesday on Tap

Written by John DiPasquale:

The loud cracks of thunder & bright flashes of lightning that rolled through late last night/early this morning was the result of an approaching warm front & upper air disturbance. Behind the warm front due to squeak through mid to late this morning will allow a brief warm up to near 60 during the lunch hour. Colder air & lots of wind will develop later this afternoon into the evening in the wake of a strong cold front due to pass through this afternoon. Temperatures will likely plunge back into the 40s to end the day.

A reinforcing shot of cold air will slide through late tonight with a few rain & snow showers & Thursday you will feel the chill & probably even see a couple of passing snow showers & flurries to start the day. Highs with a gusty, cold northwest wind & intervals of sun will only reach the low to mid 40s tomorrow!

Friday will begin frosty, but we should climb to near 50 with the help of some sun fading behind increasing afternoon clouds. The holiday weekend right now looks milder Saturday after early rain & storms, similar to what we had early this morning. Balmy, gusty southwest winds should drive temps up into the 60s Saturday with a bit of afternoon sun. Cooler, but dry, fairly pleasant weather seems to be in the offering for our Easter Sunday here in WNY. This is great news for all of those Easter Egg hunts with the kids! Yes, you'll need the jackets if you are going to be out & about Sunday, but at least the strong late April sun will be out & there will be no rain.

Warmer weather looks to be in store for us Monday through at least Wednesday/Thursday! Stay tuned.

  1. Just looked at the long range forecast from the NWS.

Though our temperatures will improve, they have rain for each and every day for the next two weeks.

My yard is starting to look like a pond.

Scott, is this a taste of how our summer will be?

Oops. Gotta give John points for trying to be optimistic.

Anyone REALLY believe Easter would be nice? Anyway, try and enjoy the gusty, cold northwest wind tomorrow.

  3. Really, how often is Easter Sunday nice? I remember sitting outside with the family for a while last year so it must have been somewhat nice but it seems that it's usually cold and rainy or snowy.

  4. It DID turn sunny for periods this afternoon.

  5. I don't think Summer will be bad at all! Although delayed a bit, I expect us to heat up mid to late Summer. La Nina is going away we think sometime in the next few weeks. Neutral ENSO should allow for stronger Bermuda highs to take hold.

  6. I love those bermuda highs keeping the stronger cold fronts at bay. My favorate pattern in the spring is a cold front that stalls out over Minnesota and then returns north as a warm front, keeping our area safely in the warm sector day after day, with the bulk of the stormy / cloudy conditions streaking safely off to north and west, while we remain sunny with downsloping southerly winds. I'm patiently looking out for that pattern to arrive.

    Scott,
Just curioius...do you think the Lilacs will be able to bloom in time for the festival this year, or are they at risk of being late this year due to all this chillier weather?

  7. Mid to late summer? Do we really have to wait that long for warmth?? Say it isn't so....
