SHADOWING LAKE ONTARIO
Written By: Scott Hetsko
Often we think of lake shadows on a Southwest wind along Lake Erie. This afternoon I've noticed all the CU (cumulus cloud) development in the Southern Tier. Thunderstorms are developing in this area and those storms will have a hard time firing up in Monroe County.
A nice Northeast lake breeze is transporting cool and stable lake air into the Rochester metro this afternoon. The unstable air is South and as a result most of this evenings storms will be South of the thruway. Saturday afternoon will likely be a different story as we lose the NE wind. Sunday will be the wettest of the weekend with occasional rain and cooler air.
Scott,
ReplyDeleteThe temperature at the Rochester airport reached 80 at 1PM today. It then dropped back down into the 70's and has stayed there since. Is that the lake breeze making it all the way to the south side of the city where the airport site is? Or is it something else?
The high was reached at 1 p.m then the lake breeze kicked in and dropped the temperature just about 4 degrees at the airport. The effect was stronger along the Lake Ontario Parkway.

It was nice while it lasted. Now back to the crappy, cloudy, gloomy, cool and rainy weather we are so accustomed to here in Rochester. This week was a blessing and a treat. It makes me long to live in a climate where the sun shines more than 20% in a year.
ReplyDeleteWhen can I open the pool??? Looking for a "pattern shift" you sometimes talk about. Anything on the horizon?
