Heat Wave Begins Today

Written by John DiPasquale:

Phew!! That's what a lot of people will be saying or thinking when heading out this afternoon & again tomorrow, Friday & somewhat but not as much over the weekend. We are in for the first official heat wave of the season & it's going to be quite intense. Highs today will reach the low 90s, but today will just be the tip of the iceberg, as 95 to 100 degree heat will be felt tomorrow afternoon when the heat peaks. THE LAST TIME ROCHESTER REACHED THE CENTURY MARK WAS JUNE 21ST, 1953, & THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED SINCE 1850 IS 102 ON JULY 9TH & 10TH IN 1936. Clearly this type of heat is not something we experience often here in WNY. Seek the AC &/or pool/lake, keep hydrated & remember to check on the elderly, very young, those with respiratory problems & the pets during this heat wave. If you are going to take part in outdoor activities try to do them early in the morning before 9, or in the evening after 7 or 8. This afternoon & tomorrow the heat index/feel like readings will reach the mid to upper 90s & 105 to 110, respectively. That equals danger if you have to be outside for an extensive period of time without taking the proper precautions. It's going to feel like a sauna!

A weak cold front moving into & through the area with a couple of scattered storms possible Thursday night into Friday. This will take a little of the edge off the heat & humidity for the end of the week & a bit more so over the weekend, but it will remain quite hot, steamy & mainly dry through the period.

Thankfully, some relief will arrive Monday in the form of a cold front Monday with some showers & storms, a few of which could be nasty. Highs will fall back into the 80s Monday & MAYBE even the 70s to around 80 by next Tuesday?!?! Stay tuned to News 8 for latest on the high heat & humidity.

  1. We really are in dire need of rain. All the lawns in Gananda are pure brown. We only received .08 from the last front. I hope the front on Sunday will provide more, but I am sure it will not be what we need.

  2. Its been a good run , but like Weatherdan said we need rain. If we dont get a decent amount of rain soon it is possible some lawns will see permanent damage!

  3. Scott, John or Stacey,

What are your thoughts on the possibility of Lake ERIE keeping the temperatures down somewhat across the Rochester Metro. I see that the NWS Forecast Discussion mentions the possibility of that due to a very strong SW flow funnelling up the longest fetch of lake Erie.

  5. I want 100 degrees. Come on let's do it. I see Scott lowered the temps for the weekend. Scott you said the front on Monday looks weak. The NWS said it will be strong with a good chance of rain. What are your thoughts on rainfall with the front? Thanks

  6. See below from the NWS on the drought:

OUR REGIONHAS BEEN PLACED IN THE "D0" DESIGNATION FOR EXCESSIVE DRYNESS.

I think this is an understatement. To me we are in a major short term drought.

  7. Hi everyone, We definitely need a nice soaking, but unfortunately, I do not see that in the cards in the foreseeable future. The best chance we have of getting some showers & storms looks to be Monday night into Tuesday with a cold front, but that's about it for the next 7+ days. Hmmm...Lake Erie keeping us cooler today...Well, we had more of a SW flow earlier today, but the data suggests more of a westerly flow for much of the rest of today & because of that I don't think Lake Erie is going to keep us cooler today. If it was more SW, or shifts to more of a SW direction this afternoon it could keep us a touch cooler, but either way it's going to be nasty, as it already is with a heat index of 102 at 11AM! Ouch!! If you have never been in a sauna & want to know what it feels like just step outside right now & through early this evening. This is why I would never live in Florida/deep south. Have a good day & try to stay cool everyone!
