What a Day!

Written by John DiPasquale:

High pressure moving overhead is providing us with lots of sun today, but believe it or not, we all have a pretty good chance of receiving a decent shot of rain tomorrow. I know...you'll believe it when you see it. The showers & storms expected to develop tomorrow, with one or two possible very late tonight will be caused by a warm front & upper air disturbance. At this point, it appears that most of us should pick up about a quarter to half an inch, while whoever receives a heavier t-storm or two during the day could easily pick up between a half an inch & an inch! Wouldn't that be nice!

Behind the warm front, we will dry out for the most part later Thursday night into Friday with just an isolated storm or two possibly popping up to end the week. Highs Thursday will be within a few degrees of 80, but MAY not make 80, & if that's the case then it would be the first time Rochester did make 80 degrees or higher this month!! Rochester has never had a month that consisted of high temperatures of 80 degrees or higher each & everyday, but if we do it tomorrow then a new record in the 141 years of record keeping in Rochester will exist! Stay tuned to News 8 & we will keep you posted on whether this happens or not. Also, this month will likely be among the top 10, if not top 5, warmest months on record in Rochester. Hot stuff!

Temperatures, speaking of temperatures, will likely reach well into the 80s Friday, Saturday & Sunday as we round out July. There will be the threat for a couple of scattered storms Sunday, but for the most part much o fthe weekend is looking dry right now. Big surprise, right?! Stay tuned.

  1. You guys and gals love to use that same tower cam view of Rochester. It's OK, but it makes the city look like the size of Scranton (no offense to my friends in Scranton). But Rochester has much more attractive and metropolitan looking skyline than that. I'd like to see some tower cams showing the Xerox Tower and/or Chase Tower in the background. That angle of the city is much more beauiful and flattering, in my humble opinion. Just a suggestion. Other than that, I think the News 8 / Fox Rochester Weather Team is the best in Western New York! Keep up the good work!

  2. According to National Weather Service they have reduced our rain chances from 70% for today to just 40% for today. I am worried that we wont see any of it. Also the Drought Monitor shows all of our area now in D0 drought conditions and it wont be long till we get placed into D1 conditions if we dont get rain. Does anyone here know what the worst drought western NY has ever seen?

  3. Good morning,

Thank you very much Rochester, NY! Unfortunately, the tower cam we are using almost all the time is the only one we have up that's running, but it is our goal to get some other DOT cams up & running, which will show some different shots, but probably not a shot of Xerox or Chase Towers. I will make the suggestion to my news director to see if that would be something we could pull off.

    Anonymous,

I know, I totally agreed with the NWS when I arrived early this morning. I dropped my rain chances from about 70 to 80% yesterday to 30 to 40% due to more of a southerly track with the upper air disturbance & a weaker warm front
:-( So other than a few light showers & sprinkles for some, I don't expect anything significant rainfall wise today, but NOW tomorrow is looking wetter as a cold front swings through with some showers & storms. Stay tuned. After tomorrow, though, no significant rains in forecast for the next several days to come, but there are signs of a pattern change for the wetter & cooler next weekend &/or beyond. We will see. Too far out to have much confidence in this yet, but definitely something to watch.
