Seasonably Cool Today, but...

Written by John DiPasquale:

A September feel has returned to the area today, but you may think it's late October come tomorrow & Friday following a strong cold front passage late tonight. After a nice, seasonably cool day today, some showers will arrive late tonight into tomorrow morning with, & just behind the aforementioned cold front. A gusty, blustery northwest wind will usher in the coldest air we've felt since May, as highs will climb no higher than the mid 50s! There will also likely be a few lake effect showers coming in off Lake Ontario tomorrow afternoon & night with intervals of sun around too. I hate to even mention this, but I cannot even rule out a few ice pellets/graupel in any shower that falls over the high terrain late Thursday & Thursday night south of Rochester! That's how cold this air mass is going to be.

Thankfully, a large, strong area of Canadian high pressure will be pushing in from the west which will aid in providing more sun to the region Friday, & especially over the weekend. The still strong mid September sun will work on modifying the air mass slowly, but surely this weekend. Highs Friday will still be well below average in the upper 50s, but we should make the low to mid 60s Saturday & 65 to 70 come Sunday. By the way, Friday & especially Saturday morning there's a pretty good chance that areas of frost will develop in more rural areas away from the lakes with lows expected to be in the 30s & low 40s! So if you live a normally colder spot away from the lakes, mainly south of Rochester you may want to cover or bring in your tender vegetation/flowers. Bottom line...get the warm clothing ready for the next few days after today.

Enjoy the nice weather out there today!
