Freezing Rain

For this to happen the cold air is very shallow. This usually occurs when warm air is forced over existing stubborn cold air at the surface. As precipitation falls through the warmer air aloft, it changes from snow to rain. Since the cold air is very thin, the rain does not have time to change back to snow or sleet so it freezes on contact and freezing rain is born.
