Don't be Deceived, It's Still Winter

Written By: Brian Neudorff

For many, March is when we start to put the cold and snow of winter behind us, and look forward to the warmer days of spring. Although Monday will give us a nice "taste" of spring weather, it will not last. Another winter storm will spread a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow Tuesday into Wednesday.

Monday's warm spring-like temperatures are in response to the approaching storm. Southernly winds out ahead of the storm will become breezy and push temperatures into the mid to upper 50s with the possibility of an isolated 60.

Once this storm system arrives, like many we have seen this winter, will move through central PA up through New England and will spread an icy wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. If you are still curious on why we will get ice rather than snow, Scott had a great explanation of why these storms bring us more of a wintry mix than snow a few weeks ago.

  1. Been watching the radar all day here. I am not a meteorologist but it looked like to me since this morning that this storm would either skim us or just fall apart...it appears to be doing just that. They should cancel the Winter Storm Warning.

  2. Do not by any means intend to disparage weather forecasting. Just wanted to add my observations.

  3. kbc, I can see where you would think that. National Weather Service issues a Winter Storm Warning from noon Tuesday until noon Wednesday and like any warning you would think that the inclement weather would be taking place during that time frame. As you can see from this radar still I took at 4:15 PM EST 03/04/08 you can see the storm is centered in the Ohio River valley and the main precipitation field associated with this storm has yet to make it to us. That along with some upper air support will help to spread more precipitation into the region overnight and into Wednesday morning. I wouldn't call this storm dead yet. Just wait, it won't be much worst than anything we have seen this winter and may not be all that bad at all. You just have to be careful when forecasting ice. It can be tricky.

  4. kbc...I appreciate what you're saying but the warning is for tonight and early Wednesday. Believe me, it's quite appropriate given the snow and ice we expect later this evening.

  6. Oh, sorry Scott, did not see your reply. Thanks! I am just a disgruntled Rochester native snow-lover. I wish we could steer the jet stream and get some genuine big snow storms here. Friday maybe?..keeping my fingers crossed!
