ICE CAPS TO MELT IN 20 YEARS?
Written by: Bob Metcalfe
It's interesting that I write this post on such a cold morning, but I saw an article that seemed a bit shocking to me this morning.
The Catlin Arctic research team trekked for 73 days across the north pole early this year, taking ice core samples and data. They estimate that a majority of the ice is what they deem "first year" ice, approximately 6 feet thick that can melt away in as little as one summer.
Furthermore, they hypothesize that the Arctic could be ice-free during the summer months in as little as 10-20 years, a bold statement nonetheless. They also say that with the ice gone, the reflectivity loss would "accelerate" the warming of the oceans.
Only time will tell. View the Catlin Arctic Survey site here.
