BIG OL' MOON TONIGHT!
Written by: Bob Metcalfe
Cold is the story tonight, we'll likely visit the low single digits, but if we can clear out the skies, we'll see something that doesn't happen very often.
Tonight marks the moon's perigee. This is the closest point in the moon's orbit, giving it a 30% larger appearance. It's closer that the furthest point in orbit by more than 50,000 km, as well as being at a lower altitude.
According to spaceweather.com, Johannes Kepler was the first to discover this phenomenon. The best time to view the "illusion" will be around sunset, when the moon is nearing the eastern horizon.
But if you act right now, you get a free bonus! Mars is also having a close encounter with earth this evening as well. To get the full experience you'll need to have a telescope, but either way, it'll be a stunning view in the sky tonight, IF we can clear those clouds out!
