MOTHER NATURE'S IDEA OF A CRUEL JOKE

Written by: Brian Neudorff

Wow, that's the only words I could come up with when I look at the reports of 12 inches of snow in Dallas, TX yesterday. Here is the report out of the Dallas/Fort Worth NWS office:

...SNOW EVENT ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS...

AT MIDNIGHT ON FEBRUARY 11TH...DFW AIRPORT HAD RECORDED 11.2 INCHES OF SNOW. THIS BREAKS THE PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD FOR FEBRUARY 11TH OF 1.4 INCHES SET IN 1988. THIS ALSO BREAKS THE PREVIOUS 24-HOUR RECORD FOR FEBRUARY...7.5 INCHES ON FEBRUARY 17, 1978 AND FEBRUARY 25, 1924.

AT 4 AM ON FEBRUARY 12TH...DFW AIRPORT HAD REPORTED A 24-HOUR SNOWFALL TOTAL OF 12.5 INCHES. THIS BREAKS THE PREVIOUS ALL TIME 24-HOUR SNOWFALL TOTAL RECORD OF 12.1 INCHES SET JANUARY 15-16, 1964.

THE SNOWFALL TOTAL ON FEBRUARY 11TH IS THE GREATEST CALENDAR-DAY SNOWFALL TOTAL ON RECORD FOR DALLAS/FORT WORTH. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 7.8 INCHES ON JANUARY 15, 1964 AND JANUARY 14, 1917.

THIS BRINGS THE SEASONAL SNOWFALL TOTAL TO 15.7 INCHES...WHICH IS THE 2ND HIGHEST SEASONAL TOTAL ON RECORD FOR DALLAS/FORT WORTH. THIS IS THE SNOWIEST WINTER IN 32 SEASONS (SINCE 1977-1978).

Now that same storm is sliding across the south and places that RARELY get snow could get 3 to 6 inches. Snow could fall and stick on grassy surfaces right on the coast for a time today.

Then you have us here in Rochester with our seasonal snow total of 63.9" Our largest one day snowfall was 6.7" on the 28th of January. We have not had a double digit snowfall all season.

As the title of this post suggest this may be a very CRUEL joke by mother nature. If you are a snow lover this is horrible. You've been nickled and dimed to death all season as you watch areas around you get hammered with snow. Then to add insult to injury Dallas, TX gets a one day storm larger than anything we've seen all season. If your ready for Spring this forecast is horrible because although we're not getting the snow it's still cold.

This weekend won't help either of these sides unless you are a skier. Then this weekend is great. We will get a couple of light snow showers at times Friday morning shouldn't amount to too much. We could see a couple of inches Saturday and Sunday from lake effect with a west to northwest wind. Amounts seem very minor with just a couple of inches Saturday into Sunday and most along the shoreline.

  1. It makes me sick actually to see all that snow in the deep South. Many areas down South will have seen more snow in one event than we have see in any event here in Rochester. I do not think I ahve ever seen a winter like this before where we miss each and every snowstorm. I think every state has seen a synoptic event except for Western and Central New york. Unbelievable. Really it is.

  2. Another storm on Monday and Tuesday that we will miss. The beat goes on.

  3. Sorry snow lovers! I am glad and thankful for how the winters have been for Western NY. Come on Spring! I need to use my new fishing pole I received for Christmas.

  4. I could stand to do some fishing myself, but I still would like a reason to use the new plow :)
