NOTHIN' MUCH GOING ON...

Written by: Bob Metcalfe

This pattern is as interesting as a 1040mb high parked over the Great Lakes in the middle of July. No features of great impact or interest for our area are expected for several days as we stay locked in a cold-but-not-extremely-cold pattern through next week. The image above depicts the northern jet crashing south, bringing more near-record cold into the mid-Atlantic and deep south through Monday and Tuesday. Based on model data, there may be spots hundreds of miles south of us that actually end up colder at times as a lobe of cold gets cut-off in the flow!

We'll see a pin wheel sort of setup with variable clouds, sunshine and on/off chances for light snow showers or flurries in that time frame as well. Although some slight lake effect snow could bring 1-3" of fluffy snow near some spots along the lake on Sunday, there's no well spelled out features for any significant snow in the near term.

Numbers will remain in the low 30s for highs (a few degrees below normal), with lows near 20 or so.

Some optimism for snow lovers though. You all know that the best storms come when we see a phasing of the northern and southern streams. It's taking quite a good dip south, which could make it a bit more vulnerable.

  1. Wow, you better send one of those annoying bulletins across the bottom of the screen. Maybe some annoying beeps too!

  2. Looks like computer models are taking this next storm more and more to the West. Its not going to be a blizzard but we might get into several inches?

  3. The GFS takes this storm well South and East. We will be lucky to see an inch. We get to be spectators yet to another snowstorm South and East. The beat goes on and on. It looksmlike the patter will change at the end of this month to more warm weather and a storm track to our West. I say we get no storms this year and end the year at a dismal 70-80 inches. It is amazing how we stay at average snowfall. We get .6 hear and .8 there which keeps us at average snowfall. I have never seen such a winter where we miss every snowstorm.

  5. Thanks for the links, but both still say we get light snow showers at best with no more than an inch. The NWS agrees with no impact on Western, NY.
