SMALL HAIL, LIGHTNING IN SOME STORMS THIS EVENING
Written By: Scott Hetsko
A line of thunderstorms is moving toward Western New York this mid afternoon. The line is holding together but since we haven't had any sunshine today, it won't get much help from the surface. But since this a line of ELEVATED CONVECTION that won't matter much. Expect showers and storms to reach areas West of Rochester between 3:30 and 4:30. After 5 p.m. for showers and storms in Rochester as this line rockets East at about 60 mph!
Please check back for updates as there is a small risk a storm can become severe with damaging hail and wind gusts over 56 mph.
Scott,
ReplyDeleteIs Elevated Convection a characteristic always associated with thunderstorms in a warm front?
Yeah looks like it's coming our way!
ReplyDeleteWeather service issued a warning, and is that a poss tornadoes cell? Just S of Buffalo. 3:21pm
I meant Tornadic cell ;)
ReplyDeleteThat storm doesn't have a history of producing tornado. There may be some small rotation with that storm but the main threat would be hail and some gusty winds.
ReplyDeleteLooks like that storm will stay south along the Southern Tier and Chautauqua Ridge. We will get some thunderstorms and moderate rain here between 4 & 6pm
ReplyDeleteElevated convection is common with warm fronts partly due to the warmer air riding over cooler air at the surface. Surface based storms are more common with cold fronts
ReplyDeleteJust some rain and thunder for us this evening. Severe weather well Southeast
ReplyDeleteI see the NWS has bumped highs for tomorrow WAY down from their original call for near 80 a couple days ago. Will we at least hit 70 tomorrow?
ReplyDeleteLocation, location, location! I think near 80 degrees Southeast of Rochester in the Finger Lakes. Low to mid 70s here. Very tough temperature forecast tomorrow, high bust potential.
ReplyDeleteScott, is the cold front going to come through tomorrow? (temps dropping later in the afternoon). Or will we get a full day of pre-frontal airmass?
ReplyDeleteI would love a bust, as long as the bust is for the warmer side. How great would it be if at noon tomorrow it's partly sunny with temps nearing 80 in Rochester! Could it happen?
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian! Re: Tornadic cell
