Wow! It got warmer last night than I thought it would. That didn't take too long to melt a lot of the snow already. We can see grass here in Hilton! The backyard ice rink is melted, too. Too bad it has to be so windy....makes it hard to enjoy the warm up.
ReplyDeleteYep, big warmups this time of year often come with a price...lots of wind.
ReplyDeleteWe lost several inches of snowpack across Rochester, but just looking at most front yards and bushes, I can see we still have a long way to go before getting any widespread bare ground across the metro. The snow is very densely packed, so it's certainly melting much slower than lake effect fluff would melt. Friday afternoon may when we really start to see lots of bare patches. Then it cools down and the melt slows dramatically by the weekend.
I think a slow melt is what we want. Too fast and we will be chasing water.
ReplyDeleteA little at a time is the way to go. Sounds like that might be the case.
temps tonight are supposed to crash down to like 11 degrees. That will definitely put the thaw to a screaching halt.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not wish casting, but the models have been consistent for a few days now about something coming our way early next week... Am I the only one seeing this!?
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Weatherguy. The models have a fairly potent storm impacting our area around next Tuesday. The track of the low looks to be to our west, however. So at this point it looks like a mainly rain event, perhaps mixing or changing to snow toward the tail end - especially if a secondary low gets going to our east and brings in the colder air sooner. The models have beeen hinting at that possible secondary forming, so it's a possibility. But given that it's a la nina winter, and the trend lately for the primary lows to hold on longer before tranfering energy, my money is on mainly rain out of that one. This is also consistent with the current phases of the NAO and PNA to favor a more western trough rather than an eastern trough. Things can change, of course. And probably will.
ReplyDeleteI think that the wind and warm air are speeding up the snow melting. Of course I felt this was coming for a few weeks now, I seen Geese flying north and about 5 robins in the back yard the other day.
ReplyDeleteI had robins in my back yard in early January--idiots are probably all frozen to death by now.
ReplyDeleteStill plenty of snow on the ground in Gates--I see NO grass. It'll take a long time to melt this mess. Thankfully, the roof is beginning to clear off.
