Taste of Winter Chill Thursday

Written by John DiPasquale:

It will be turning a bit colder this afternoon, but especially late tonight into tomorrow is when coldest air of the season will arrive. Temperatures will nose dive back into the low to mid 30s tonight & struggle to inch up near 40 tomorrow afternoon! Winds will be blowing hard out of the west too on our Thursday which will just accentuate the chill & make it feel more like the 20s to low 30s throughout the day. BRRR!!! The cold air will be accompanied by a limited amount of moisture in the form of some clouds & possibly a few snow showers & flurries developing later in the day Thursday with a disturbance. Some lake snows will likely get going off the East ends of Lake Erie & Ontario, but should not add up to much in Southwestern New York, but several inches may pile up over the Tug Hill Plateau East of Lake Ontario Thursday afternoon & night. Come Friday, the weather will quiet down & begin to warm up a bit, as high pressure builds in & quickly shifts off to the South & East of the area. This will result in a return southerly, warming flow Friday afternoon. Highs Friday should make the mid to perhaps upper 40s, but the gusty breeze will certainly make it feel more like the 30s to around 40 instead. Still it will be an improvement compared to what we are going to feel Thursday.

High pressure will remain close enough to the region Saturday to keep us somewhat sunny & the southerly flow will continue to warm us even further! Highs Saturday afternoon should hit the mid & upper 50s!

On Sunday, it will remain mild, if not even a bit milder than Saturday as temperatures will be well up into the 50s to around 60, despite quite a few clouds & possibly a shower or two. It will also likely be pretty windy on Sunday too. Enjoy the milder weather this weekend everyone!

A cold front will most likely get through here Sunday night/early Monday & behind it temperatures will turn more seasonable for a few days with fairly uneventful weather the way it looks now. However, come Turkey Day into much of the holiday weekend the weather is looking milder again with maybe a bit of rain. We'll see. Thanksgiving & the holiday weekend are still a long ways out there, so I'm sure the forecast will change at least somewhat, but that's the early indications by the forecast data.

Have a nice day WNY!

  1. Could any of the mets at least give a hint about this winter before the outlook comes out this weekend? Give us this much....Might it be a good year for us snow-lovers, or not so much???

  2. I THINK WINTER IS GOING TO START LATE THIS YEAR. JUST MY OPINION. WE MAY NOT SEE SNOW UNTIL MID-DECEMBER.

  3. Hi SnowFan,

I too, am a big fan of snow. It's my favorite type of weather by far & I would love a really snowy winter. Weather is very cyclical, & it all usually balances out. So, with that being said, we have had an overall pretty good stretch with annual snowfall totals over the majority of the last decade. The only really weak year was 01-02. However, we have not had many nor'easters slide up just East of the Appalachians & through Eastern New York affect WNY over the last several years. That said, we are due for either a under 90" winter, or above 120 or 130" with lots of storms & some lake snow to boot. Basically we are due for one extreme or the other. The NAO will play a big role. Tune into our weather special Saturday night at 730 on News 8 to hear more details.

    Have a great day!

    John

  4. Thanks, John!!

I would love a big nor'easter, too. They've ducked and dodged us for years, now. Hopefully this is the year. D.C, Phila, NYC and Boston don't need anymore nor'easters. Besides, they don't appreciate it like we do here in WNY. Let's bring in those more inland tracking storms that give the big east coast cities all rain and bury WNY with feet of snow! Here's to hoping.
