Sun Today; Bit of Snow Tomorrow

Written by John DiPasquale:

The pressure gradient between high pressure to the southwest & the departing East coast storm will be pretty tight today. As a result, the winds will be blowing pretty hard through the day making it feel very much like December 8th despite the sun. It is nice to see the sun, though, after not having it appear since Sunday. Ok. so we are quiet, brisk & chilly today, but how about the snow potential late tonight through Friday?

At this point, it appears everyone will see at least some snow in the air. However, most of us should not pick up any more than a coating to an inch or two, as temperatures will be mainly above freezing throughout the day tomorrow in the mid to upper 30s. To the West of Rochester more significant lake snows will develop late tonight & last right into Friday night before tapering off late tomorrow night/eary Saturday as high pressure builds in from the West. The latest data is suggesting that lake snows will set up & hang out between Buffalo & Niagra Falls to near Batavia to the Lake Ontario shoreline & may even affect at times Hilton in Northwest Monroe county from late tonight through much of Friday. Late Friday into Friday night the strong cold front will finally, slowly push through, which will shift the winds to more of a west-northwesterly direction. The front will be accompanied with it's own snow showers, but will probably carry a few of the squalls through the Greater Rochester area & possibly the Western Finger Lakes regions too late Friday into Friday evening. Bottom line, I believe the worst part of the day for most with regards to visibility & possibly some slick roads will likely be late Friday into Friday night. In the most persistent snows a good 2 to 6", if not more, will likely accumulate in the aforementioned areas West of the Rochester area.

High pressure will clear us out for Saturday, Sunday & at least Monday before the next system tries to throw some clouds & possibly a little rain &/or wet snow late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Temperatures will go from the upper 20s to around 30 Saturday back into the 40s for Monday & Tuesday next week.

  1. john, later friday when the cold front sweeps thru...will the possible coating-2inches the city of rochester receives be solely from the synpotic moisture associated with the upper air disturbance.. or will the city stand a greater chance from the southwest flow of the plume of lake effect band that will quickly brush thru rochester as the winds veer more westerly.... thanks alot man..im desperate for some snow if yaaa couldnt tell:)

  2. The Lake Effect Snow Watch has just been upgraded to a Lake Effect Snow WARNING for Orleans and Genesee county. 6 to 9 inches are expected beginning at 10PM this evening and lasting through tomorrow. The weather could turn quite bad between Batavia and Albion in our Western viewing area!
