Cooler for the Weekend, but Colder by Monday

Written by John DiPasquale:

Well, it's still very mild today, but the 60s that we will feel today will be noticeably cooler than the upper 70s to low 80s that we have felt over the last few days prior to today. A backdoor cold front slipped through last evening with some clouds, but overall it was a quiet passage. In the wake of this front, a east-northeast flow will blow today & keep temperatures mainly in the 60s this afternoon. A little batch of showers will affect the Northern & Eastern parts of Monroe County & Wayne County through the first part of this afternoon. Once that moves out we should sneak the sun out for most at times before it sets this evening.

Tonight will likely feature a few more showers late in advance of a trough of low pressure connected to a broad area of low pressure that will pass by to the south this weekend. The weekend itself will be damp at times, but I do not believe either day will be a washout, which is good news if you have outdoor plans. If you plan on taking part in outdoor plans this weekend, though, I would have an umbrella handy due to the sporadic showers. Highs will cool into the low 60s Saturday & 55 to 60 Sunday, still a good 10 to 15 degrees above average, if not a bit more than that. However, come late Sunday night a STRONG COLD FRONT will come crashing through from the north on the backside of an intensifying Gulf of Maine/Novia Scotia storm. This will drop temperatures into the upper 20s to mid 30s when we head out early Monday morning with MAYBE even a snow shower/few flurries to start Monday with a howling, cold wind! Monday's highs despite a good amount of sun will struggle to reach the low 40s Monday & Tuesday after a frosty start to Tuesday. Wind chills will likely be in the teens & 20s Monday through the start of Tuesday too! So yes, dust off the winter jackets because you will definitely need them early next week.

Have a great day & weekend everyone!

  1. Will this cause a hard enough freeze or frost to kill any flowers that have started such as tulips?

  2. And will the grass, which has greened up and already could use mowing stop growing again? I feel so bad for all of the farmers out there that could suffer greatly from the upcoming hard freeze.

  3. Hi Anonymous & Snowluver,

I'm sure some of the flowers will not make it tonight & tomorrow morning due to the duration of the below freezing temperatures expected to occur.

With regards to the nice green grass...I believe it will at least slow the growth, but not so sure it will totally stop it.

This is the coldest air we've felt since March 10th, so over two weeks ago! It's been awhile! The cold, Canadian high pressure will move overhead late tonight into Tuesday which will keep us a little on the cool side tomorrow. After not making it out of the 30s for highs today, & bottoming out within a few degrees of 20 late tonight & early Tuesday with a hard freeze, we should rebound into the low to mid 40s Tuesday afternoon under a good deal of sun.

Late Tuesday night a storm system will bring a warm front through with some showers/storm & milder temperatures. Highs will hit the 60s again Wednesday, but then we should drop back into the 40s & low 50s for Thursday & Friday with maybe even a bit of snow mixed with lingering rain showers on Thursday, especially over the high terrain. The sun should return with seasonably chilly temps on Friday.

Have a great day & enjoy your Monday everyone!

What does the next two weeks look like in terms of the long-term projection? Will we be caught up in this Canadian High Pressure for the next few weeks. Or might we move back into above normal temps?

  5. Wow, March will actually be well below normal in rainfall. Finally.

  6. What does it look like for next week? Someone at work said we will be getting colder and possibly measurable snow?
