Some Lingering Snow & Mix this Afternoon

Written by John DiPasquale:

A slushy coating to a few inches or so of concrete snow fell for most last night through early this morning, with about 3 to 7" across the high terrain south.  The rest of today expect to see occasional snow mixed with rain at times & a little patchy snizzle/drizzle.  There may be another coating to an inch of slushy snow in spots, but no real significant accumulations are expected this afternoon.  Temperatures this afternoon will be in the mid to upper 30s.

Come tonight, the air will cool a bit more, & precipitation will linger around the fairly weak surface storm hanging around the area, which should lead to another slushy coating to an inch or two of wet snow tonight.  A bit more will fall on Thursday with a little rain mixed in at times with highs Thursday in the mid to upper 30s.  It will also turn more brisk later Thursday on the backside of the slowly departing storm.

Later Thursday night int o Friday a good amount of low level moisture & a colder northerly flow will keep some snow showers going with a few squalls mixed in there.  Minor accumulations will be possible later Thursday night into Friday, but nothing too significant is expected.

The weekend still looks cold & windy with a bit more snow thanks to limited lake effect being aided by lingering wrap around moisture from slowly departing storm.  Temperatures will likely be about a good 5 to 10 degrees below average this weekend, & winds will make it feel a lot worse.

Enjoy the rest of your day WNY!

Best,
John

  1. It was a nice surprise to finally see snow blanket the area last night/this morning! Between last night and today, the airport has reported 3.9 inches! Oh, and its still snowing... Wouldn't be surprised if most areas see 5-7+" total by the time the weekend rolls around. Just goes to shows you that you don't need big storms to have snow pile up around here. Hats off to John and Stacey, you guys had the most accurate forecast once again!!

  2. Too bad it wasn't a few degrees colder or it really would have piled up.

  3. Not everyday you see Toronto get lake enhancement... Looks like a good band setting up for them. Enjoy the snow everyone!

  4. My 3 and 5 year old are really enjoying this winter. Even if we don't get any big storms it has been fun.

  5. Really Weatherguy? That is what the Rochester winter has become a few inches of slushy snow and we are giddy? So sad that is the excitement on the blog. Get used to it because winter is over and I hope you enjoyed your 3 inches of wet snow.

    1. I thought you said winter was over in January?

  6. We're gonna finish February with around 29"-30", which is about 8" above normal for the month. So for the season we are currently at about 64".

Our 72 year average for March is 15", and in years where we had a snow deficit in Nov-Jan the "median" for March biases the high side at near 18". Throw in a few more inches in April (hope we don't get any in April, but have to face those facts), and we will end up only a little on the low side of a normal winter.

  7. Pack it up because winter is done now. You can live in the glory of 3 inches you just got because that is the grand finale. I know Weatherguy is trying to justify his pretty winter week ahead post. Give me a break! We are getting no where near 15 inches of snow in March. So, we will finish with about 70 inches tops for the season. I beleive the norm is around 100 inches far below our norm for the second consecutive year. So, not sure where you get on the low side of a normal winter Andy? You are reaching now. There are no storms on the horizon and time is running out. Get out the spring gear because spring has sprung.

    1. Dude seriously you said spring was done in January and we then got almost 30 in February.

    2. It may not snow much more but spring is definitely not here. Looks like a month of wet, cold misery ahead. Hopefully it won't add mountains of snow to the misery just the usual WNY variety.
NWS has backed off the call for above normal temps in March--so down we go.

  8. Does anyone take the "spring is here" anonymous poster seriously anymore? They are like Baghdad Bob..claiming spring is here when it's snowing and 20 degrees out.

  9. Amazing John throws out this morning on his graphic east coast storm with a question mark next Wednesday. What is he talking about? Following a models seven days out? Nothing really there and if it is way east of us. Does everyone just hope for snow including mets? Other channels have us at or above 40 next Wed/Thurs. Unreal snow mongers just enjoy the spring and below average snow we have received this winter again.

  10. We will and always have missed every East Coast storm. I do not take any East coast storm seriously. They always go East and south.

  11. Based on the latest GFS run and the Euro John is not off base so anonymous 6:02 you just may have egg on your face. Still a bit east of us but definitly have to keep an eye on next Wed-Thursday time frame. I am not an expert but that is how I see it.

  12. Sorry anonymous 6:02AM...never used a graphic showing storm affecting us possibly next Wednesday?? I did mention that we would have to watch that time frame, but no graphic. You must have been watching someone else? I do think there's a chance of us being affected by it, as models trend this way a bit more with each run the last day or two, but way too far out to have any confidence either way. Have a great day & weekend everyone!

    Best,
    John
