Familiar pattern returns
We've seen bouts of cold air and minor snow events the past several weeks but many snow lovers are still waiting for the big one. Well...you're going to have be patient because there's not much wintry weather in sight.
We will see some local accumulation today with lake effect squalls but as we head into the weekend, a familiar pattern is going to develop across the country. A deep trough of low pressure will develop across the western half of the country and into the Midwest with a ridge of high pressure building over the Northeast.
Several areas of low pressure will develop over the Southern Plains and then lift northeast into the western Great Lakes, remaining well west of western New York. This places us in a very mild, breezy and occasionally wet weather pattern into the middle of next week. Any significant wintry weather will impact the Rockies and western high plains.
By the middle of next week, temperatures could soar into the mid 50s, nearly 20-25 degrees above average for this time of year.
There are signs that some much colder air will arrive by the end of next week but even with that, still no real signal of any significant winter storm for western New York.

Well at least we might get another advisory next week-- a wind advisory that is. At least it gets cold again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new thread.
YEA - new thread.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear this...last February was a brutal month and I was hoping it wouldn't be that bad this year.
ReplyDeleteUm..yeah this is only the first few days of February. I wouldn't get used to the temps.
DeleteHappy 50th Anniversary to my favorite blizzard!!!
ReplyDeleteMuch colder air by end of the week...as in mid to upper 30's??? Grasping at straws I see..
ReplyDeleteWeather channel climate map shows Feb-April as well above average temps for western NY. Sorry Folks, no snow storms for you!! This winter has been absolutely amazing so far, I am loving it!
ReplyDeleteIt has not been amazing for those that count on winter like ski resorts, business that sell winter items, snowplowers, etc.
DeleteThat is why you always have a back-up plan.
DeleteWhat would be a back up plan for a ski resort?
DeletePrivate snowplowing contractors have made a bunch of free money so far this year from any person or business that signed a contract. The only thing it hurts is overtime pay for the highway plows and anyone who may only plow and not work otherwise in the winter.
DeleteThere will be a blizzard in The Flower City by the next 14 days. Mark it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure how it will play out but the week after the Super Bowl is going to be an interesting. We will know a lot more a week from today. Hopefully CCCC gets back and gets ready to track we have made a truce. Plus Scott comes back so we better get ready for a big week.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like it will get more active but the questions is will these East Coast storms ride out to sea or actually track inland to give us snow for a change.
DeleteWhere did CCCC go? Someone finally get under that wanna-be meteorologist's skin and send that big headed baby packing? Happened to Snowdog once...also Farmington. They got so worked up and left for weeks and months...all because someone copied their name if I remember correctly. Buncha big babies LOL
DeleteYou really don't know when to quit do you. Wow, real nice.
DeleteThat was a new Anon on the 7:52 post. CCCC and I have made peace and are on the same page. We will be hoping a week from now things get interesting. He said he was taking a few days off and will be back. Stop the shenanigans Anon 7:52.
DeleteIt is just hard to believe we have only had 23'7" of snow so far. Yike is that pathetic.
ReplyDeleteFun fact: hiking 30 miles in a day is not a recommended activity for the uninitiated -_-
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm mostly caught up on everything...yeah, next week is when things may get more interesting from a synoptic standpoint. I managed to catch some pro met tweets about it despite my "hiatus" and I can see where they're coming from. Kind of annoying that we have to watch the snowbelts get buried yet again before we get to that point, but then that's how it always seems to go.
Wow!!! Is this January or May? People walking round in shorts and T-shirts. Washing their cars. This is unbelievable.
